Coping With COPD: Making the Most of Your Doctor Visits
An integral part of your life with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) — visiting with doctors and physicians on a regular basis — is key to your physical health. It is also a valuable time to voice any concerns you may have with your health or treatment. Your team of physicians is well-equipped to answer any questions you may have.
According to WebMD, the key is to make the most of each visit and utilize your care team to its full capacity. To ensure that you are well-prepared for each visit, make a list of questions that you have between visits. During your visit, be sure to get a thorough answer from your physician and take notes for later reference. This will ensure that each question is answered and will not need to be asked at a later date.
Keeping a diary of any changes in your health is also a good idea, as this will allow you to better relay concerns and changes to doctors. Be sure to note not only any changes in your health and/or attitude but also when you experienced this change, what factors had an influence, and similar details. This will be helpful in determining what factors are influencing your symptoms and guiding physicians in further treatment.
These two strategies will also help guide the appointment if you find yourself under the care of a doctor who struggles with thorough communication. Proper communication between patients and physicians results in improved outcomes for the patient, including:
- Enhanced satisfaction with care
- Better understanding of tests and treatments
- Improved behavioral changes, such as increased exercise and decreased smoking
- Decreased anxiety regarding COPD
Your physicians are also a valuable tool in connecting you with other health services that may benefit you. These include but are not limited to physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling and dietary consultation. If you are interested in any of these services, ask your physician for a referral or recommendation.
And remember, your health is in your hands. Do not hesitate to ask question or have physicians clarify information. Taking control of your appointment is the first step to taking control of your health.
